How we use data
Last updated: October 5, 2026
scanfree is not open yet, so right now the only thing we hold is the email addresses people give us on the waitlist (see the Privacy Policy). This page explains, in plain English, the rules we are building the product to follow. We wrote them down early so they are commitments, not afterthoughts. If the product ever stops following one of them, we will change this page first and say so.
What we will store
- What you enter. Your business name, website, location, the kinds of questions your customers ask, and any competitors you tell us about.
- Our scan results. The questions we ask the AI services on your behalf, the answers they give, the date and time, and whether each answer came from the AI's memory or from a live web search. We keep these so you can see how your results change over time.
- Our own audits of public websites. When we check a website (yours, or one the AI named instead of you), we read its public pages and keep our own notes and scores about what we found, such as "has an FAQ" or "shows prices". We do not republish other people's pages.
- Your account and billing details, once accounts exist. Payments will be handled by a payment processor, and we will not store full card numbers.
What we will never store
- Google Places details. From Google's business data we keep only a place identifier, never names, addresses, ratings, reviews, photos or other details copied from Google.
- Google-grounded AI results. We do not store answers produced by Google's search-grounded AI features.
- Yelp data. We do not collect or keep Yelp content.
- Your AI account keys or passwords. scanfree is designed to work with your own AI assistant. We do not ask for the login to it.
Who sees your results
- Your individual results are private to you. Nobody else can see which questions you asked or how your business was named.
- Public pages show aggregates only. If we publish anything on this site, such as a trend or a pattern across many businesses, it will be a combined number across many, with no individual business identifiable.
- Sharing is opt-in. We will not make an individual business's results public unless that business turns it on.
Third-party services we call
To get answers and check sites, scanfree sends questions and public web addresses to other companies' services. Today we expect these to be:
- OpenAI (ChatGPT's API)
- Anthropic (Claude's API)
- Perplexity (its search API)
- Google (for AI answers and business lookups, within Google's terms)
We may also use search or data providers such as DataForSEO or Serper, and, for online shops, marketplace interfaces such as Etsy's. This list will be kept up to date here before launch.
We send these services the questions and public information needed to produce a scan, not your account details. Each provider has its own terms. Our understanding, which we will re-check before launch, is that these providers' business API terms say they will not train their models on what we send them through the API. We do not control them, so please read their policies if this matters to you.
What we will not do
- We do not sell personal data. Not your email address, not your business details, not your results.
- We do not use your results to advertise to you or anyone else.
- We do not promise outcomes. We show what AI said on a given day. AI answers change, and we say so on every result.
Deleting your data
Email hello@edwardryan.dev from the address you signed up with and ask us to delete it. We will delete your waitlist entry now, and your account and stored results once those exist, normally within 30 days. Deleted data may remain in routine backups for a short time before it is overwritten. Third-party services keep their own records under their own policies, so we cannot delete data on their side.
